The ECO club will be spending 3 Saturday mornings this semester volunteering with the DuPage Forest Preserve to clean up and restore the Big Woods (if interested information about this location can be found below). The important details first:
When: September 28, October 26, and November 16
Time: 9AM to 12PM
Who: MVHS staff, students, AND parents of students
Where: Big Woods Forest Preserve – Meet up location can be found here
If you would like to attend one or all of these events with the ECO Club please go to this this form. The Forest Preserve and I need to have a head count in order to plan tasks and equipment needs. Thank you in advance for joining us… this is a very unique unit of the Forest Preserve, and it really needs some TLC! And club sponsors please share this with your students who might need service hours.
What makes the Big Woods unique? There are relatively few remaining forests in Northern Illinois older than 100 years. Big Woods is one of them. While it needs a lot of TLC to restore it to its former glory, it is also considered a “High Quality Conservancy” site by DFPD. This means that it has a diversity of species rarely found in Illinois forests today. However, it is at risk due to its proximity to residential areas. Please consider lending a few hours of your time or encouraging your students to talk to me about volunteering.
Besides where else will you get to see Oak Trees that are well over 100 years old!
Thank you for your time,
